About me

Education & Experience

My name is Astrid Amels,

I am a Dutch/English interpreter and translator. I have always loved the English language, even as a child, which is why my choice for the School for Translation and Interpreting in Maastricht was the obvious one. I graduated in 2000, specialising in the translation of legal documents, and I was sworn in as Dutch/English translator at the Court of Oost-Brabant in ’s-Hertogenbosch. I have been in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators since 2009 under number 515. Each registration period of 5 years, 80 Continuing Education Credits need to be obtained in order to renew this registration. I do this by attending subject-matter translation courses and translator conferences.

Following my graduation, I entered the employment of a large law firm as in-house translator. I worked there for five years, gaining legal knowledge and working among lawyers and civil-law notaries.

After that period, I was employed as translator for more than nine years at a medium-sized translation agency, where I became acquainted with the commercial side of the translation business and everything that it entails. In addition to legal texts, I also translated business texts, slightly financial texts, general texts and culinary texts, both from Dutch into English and from English into Dutch. Ever since my graduation, I have attended several training courses for translators every year in order to keep my knowledge up to date and expand it.

In 2026, I completed the module in General Interpreting Techniques C1 English of Capabel University of Applied Sciences and was sworn in as Dutch/English interpreter at the Court of Oost-Brabant in ’s-Hertogenbosch.

I started offering my services as a freelancer under the name of 040taaldiensten in 2015. In addition to providing translations, I interpret during notary appointments in the Eindhoven region (deed of transfer, mortgage deed, last will and testament, marriage contract, cohabitation agreement) for people who are not fluent in Dutch. I also give training in English fluency and legal English.

Moreover, I am a member of the Netherlands Association of Interpreters and Translators (www.ngtv.nl).

Do you have a text that needs to be translated from Dutch into English or from English into Dutch? Do you need the assistance of a sworn English interpreter at the notary, or would you like to improve your English skills? Please contact me, I am happy to make a quotation for you.
